I have a family member who died and I inherited her house but the house is in a questionable area of San Bernardino a city that I'm not very familiar with. Can anyone offer some insight into that area for me like is it safe? Are there a lot of gangs, and violent crimes around there? I notice that there are a good amount of crackheads which I guess is bad but not as bad as drive bys. Does anyone know this area?

You say it's a "a questionable area of San Bernardino" but the downtown area is big, and Arrowhead is a very long street, so it's kind of hard to offer any advice? If you just want general crime statistics on the entire city, you can look on City-Data - but if you want advice about a certain neighborhood, you may want to be a little more specific.

From the freeway, driving through, San Bernardino doesn't look all that great - and some parts aren't great at all - but there are some really nice parts, if you know where to look!

OK. I'm sorry. Well the house is in the area of Arrowhead and Baseline just a few blocks from the Courthouse, SBETA, EDD, etc. Thats about as much as I know. I don't really know what the area is called.

I went to CSUSB for a year, so I'm more familiar with the northern end of the city - but I've spent a little time downtown, in the blocks surrounding the courthouse, and it was fine during the day, but my guard went up at night. Not that I saw anything, or there was any reason for my guard to go up, but just like in any bigger city, if your guard goes up in downtown San Diego, or in Los Angeles, it will probably also go up in that part of San Bernardino at night.

Hopefully someone will come along who has spent more time downtown than I have, and will have better information for you!

Ok thanks. Yes it's very different during the day from what I've seen and I only saw it one Xmas night 8 years ago so I don't know how it is really.

I use to go to San Bernardino High School which is near from Arrowhead Ave and Baseline Rd. I think all of around Baseline is a really bad area it goes all the way towards East Highland and it usually seems that the crime near the 215 is terrible. I live North of the 210 freeway and even that part is getting to be too much at night especially with drug dealers occupying the abandon houses.

To answer your question about it being a bad area, it sort of is but then again a lot of safe places in San Bernardino are disappearing sooner or later even the rich neighborhoods will have a high crime rate.

If you really don't have to move there , then the best thing to do I talk with a local Realtor, and get what you can for it .

Yeah, arrowhead is an old historic north/south corridor - but baseline/arrowhead is not what I'd call "desirable" - but there are scatterings of OK houses. I think you should rent it out until the market improves. (do some homework on zillow.com for example for what house in that area are going for).
