It depends, but a good estimate would be anywhere from roughly $300,000 into the several millions. Rents, again it depends on how many bedrooms, etc. but a good average is around $1,000/month for an apartment. Generally they are a little higher though. If I knew what you were looking for specifically I could give you better info.

When you are asking about gated communities, are you asking which areas as in which cities? If so, I would recommend Palm Desert, Indian Wells, Rancho Mirage or La Quinta.

Let me know what you are looking for specifically and I can help you out, at least point you in the right direction.

I miss La Quinta, CA so much. I used to live just off of Adams St and Miles Ave (North La Quinta). When I was there a lot of the businesses had closed up in that shopping center off of Hwy11 and Washington, but then I moved and suddenly Best Buy, Circuit City, Costco, Henry's, USPS, and Super Wal-mart opened during the next few years.

First "the" place was Palm Springs (prior to the 80s). Then, Palm Desert was "the" place during the 90s, and now the east end of the valley is really starting to hold it's own. The only thing the La Quinta/Bermuda Dunes/Indio area need are a mall and a good movie theater and that would seal Palm Desert's fate (meaning most consumer's would no longer need to head into Palm Desert).

Unless La Quinta puts up something akin to El Paseo, those of us who want more boutiquey, upscale, higher end shopping will continue to shop Palm Desert. I think La Quinta can support an El Paseo-type shopping experience, and they really should consider it instead of giving us all the same old big box stores that every community has at every intersection.

We visited La Quinta at Christmas in 2007 and are going back in the fall. Is the area of 52nd ave and Madison a safe area? It is a house we are thinking of renting for a week. I understand the cove area is not that great anymore and wanted to know is this location apart of the cove area?

No, 52nd/Madison is not in the cove. It is on the border of Indio and Coachella though, It's pretty far out there, if you don't mind traveling a little bit to get to stores and things.

we are going to relocated Palm desert (from Dallas, TX)very shortly (within a month or two. We will be on a rental provided by the company for up to 4 months).
We have 2 little kids (5 and 1 1/2) and would like to find a good "family-friendly" place.
Going through the posts, North La Quinta seems to be a good fit although we are not sure it is within our budget ($300K-$350K). we have the following question:
- how are the shools in the area?
- what would be the utility cost the peak month (we have a 3000sqft home in Dallas and utility for the hottest month would be ~$550: $400 for electricity and $150 for water).
- I heard the HOA is extremely high (relative to Texas)
- How about city, county and school taxes?

Thank you in advance for all your help.

Just curious...
I've looked at Trilogy on 62nd Ave. and Monroe St...It was beautiful!
I keep reading that the North side is the best place to live in La Quinta. Trilogy is located on the South side next door to the Andalusia Country Club and PGA West. It is a very beautiful area! It wasn't until I made a wrong turn in that circle and ended up by Arnold Palmers Restaurant where I saw what looked like a blighted nieghborhood...I guess this is the Cove?
I've also noticed that all the celebrity restaurants are in Old Town which is Cove territory?
I would like to know what makes the South side bad? What makes the North side good?
I would have never guessed that where Trilogy is located was in anyway a bad area.
Does the South side have any problems with the bad element of Indio and Coachella?

The Trilogy area is not a bad area, but it pretty far away from shops and the freeway.
