I want to move from Connecticut to Riverside County to be near family. Is it safe living is Desert Hot Springs? The house prices are very appealing to me. Also, how are the school ratings?

Where in Riverside County does your family live?

I don't have any first-hand experience in DHS, but people do live there and I'd imagine at least some of them are kids. School ratings are below average.

Like they say, you get what you pay for.

Do expect a bit of culture shock coming from CT, however.

Lathropclan, please do a search of these forums for DHS. I hate to repeat everything that's already been posted, and MUCH has been posted. I would personaly avoid DHS like the plague, but you have to make your own choice. Please do a search.

NO, do not touch DHS with a 20 mile pole! Just X it out of your vocabulary.

The desert is ghetto and I would never raise my kids there but that is just me.

We live in a newer gated community at Mission Lakes CC in DHS, but our kids are grown and no this would not be my first choice to raise kids...that said, it's fine for us!

PS to the poster who stated the 'desert is ghetto', what's with that? That's a pretty wide statement there...there are lovely areas here in the desert, even right where we are...you can live in Beverly Hills and have crime, sheesh.

I would not live in DHS, especially with kids.

Default Desert Hot Springs

No.
The houses are cheap for a reason.
The area has the highest concentration of paroled offenders. Horrible City government. Terrible schools.
Downsize or do whatever you need to do to live in Palm Desert, La Quinta, or Rancho Mirage. Catherdral City is cheaper, better (by far) than DHS but also has some problems. Good location in the center of the Coachella Valley. Palm Springs is good, just know you and your kids are going to living in a gay tolerant environment. In my opinion tolerate is good, but I don't know your lifestyle/ideals. Sorry if this bursts your bubble.

NO, no and no. DHS is notorious for high crime, paroled felons, sex offenders and general blight. Home prices reflect the state of the city, which is just terrible. Recent budget cuts are taking police officers off the streets when there already aren't enough to go around. Not a place for families trying to raise good, educated kids.
