Moving again from the LA forum. I am attending to Claremont Graduate University from this summer. My wife and I are considering purchasing a small condo/townhouse (1BR~2BR) in a safe neighborhood that would allow me to commute to school by 30-40 min train ride or fewer than 15 mile drive (one-way). Total commute could be up to 1 hour from home. I prefer commuting by train! Our budget is around $170K. So far, we like Rancho Cucamonga and Diamond Bar (no train commute though). Also, we are considering Upland, San Dimas, Covina, La Verne..... Are we looking for the right neighborhoods? Are there any areas/streets in each neighborhood where we should avoid? Are there any other neighborhoods that we should look into? We are both Asians, moving from New York City, and would prefer to live in a safe, quiet and diversity community. Any advice/inputs would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Ok, so I found several properties which fall into my budget, but do not know if they are located in a safe area. I was wondering if somebody is familiar with the following locations and willing to provide me with inputs/advice:

1. 22800 Hilton Head Dr, Diamond Bar 91765
- More than five condos are available along this street

2. 12584 ATWOOD Ct, Rancho Cucamonga, 91739
- More than five condos are available at this address

3.1089 West PINE St Unit E Upland, 91786
- One block north of Foothill Blvd

Thanks in advance!!

Diamond Bar is nice - but why look so far?
The one in Rancho Cucamonga is in a good area
The one in Upland - much older building. Neighborhood is very close to the high school, IIRC

La Verne is very nice also. But I'm biased; I grew up there and my Mom still lives there in the older original part of town.

But why not Claremont? Live as close as you can.

Thanks for your comment, Gandalara. Glad to know that the one in Rancho Cucamonga is in a good area. I chose Diamond Bar sine many people recognize it as a nice and safe neighborhood and it is within 15miles of Claremont (No train commute, though). It would be great should we be able to find a place to live in Claremont, but our limited budget makes it almost impossible to do so.

Thanks again!

I can speak to the Rancho one and second that it is in a good area. Convenient to freeways as well (210, 15). Upland and LaVerne are nice as well.

If it were me, I would say any of the areas you mention, but Rancho C and Upland would be my first choices, followed by San Dimas and La Verne..All the areas around Claremont are pretty diversified..

Thanks for your comments, PHItoLAX and Nita. My wife really likes what we have found so far about Rancho Cucamonga. I like some properties in Upland and Diamon Bar as well, although there are not many that we could afford in these cities. It is looking like the neighborhoods we are considering are generally considered good, so we will definitely be going to visit and take a look at the areas sometime soon.

Thanks for your valuable info, airjunky! Living close to some Asian markets/restaurants would be a big plus! We are leaning toward Rancho Cucamonga, but will definitely revisit Diamond Bar, again.
