Sounds like Fashion Valley (Macy's, Nordstrom's, Bloomindales) and Mission Valley (Macy's, Target) mall are more you style. They are off the 8 past the 805. This is just on the north side of the 8, University Heights is on the south side of the 8.

As per the post below. Oh, you mean non chain store places. I feel dumb. LOL.

LOL. When you said those stores, I was thinking WTF is he/she talking about?! I am glad you saved this though because I found it funny! I am giving you rep points anyway!

Well, thanks. It's a certain kind of comedy when the response is a completely different direction, albeit unintentional. Like those "your argument is invalid" pics.

In any case, yeah, I remember going to a hole in the wall bar there on La Mesa Blvd and thinking it was nice area for walking around to see the shops. The places were generally built in the 50's so the building/housing lot spaces aren't so crowded and fairly walkable. You can do a virtual "drive by" using Google Street View.

Try looking around Hillcrest and North Park and see if you like the vibe in those places.

What I would do without this forum! Thanks guys. I will definitely check out these neighborhoods! I looked them up on Wikipedia, and they all seem really cool. I really like the way La Mesa Village and University Heights sound.

Do you have Google Earth? You might find it useful to use that and explore those areas to get a feel before you come.

Did a timed drive from OB to PV. It took 50 minutes. It did suck the life out of me. Ugh. I love OB so much, but I know I couldn't handle it every weekday hitting the road at 6:10 each morning.

La Mesa is surprisingly quite gorgeous and the "village" is really pretty neat. I don't think you'd be unhappy there--though I can understand the desire to live elsewhere. I live in Mission Valley (by the Qualcomm) and at times I wish we had a place in a funkier/walkable 'hood. Though our new construction, spacious place with an attached garage *is* nice...

Thanks Pink Squid. Checking out La Mesa tomorrow. As much as I love OB and University Heights, I need the extra sleep. Eh I figure I could at least go to OB and other funkier areas I like on the weekends because I am always so exhausted to leave my bedroom after work anyway!
