Hi guys,

A San Diego company recently flew to San Diego from Texas for a job interview. I like the people there and I think they like me too because they offered me the position on the spot. However, the salary is about $7000 lower than the offer I get from Texas and the SD's benefit package is nowhere compared to the Texas' one (SD: 10 vacation days vs. TX 16.5; SD: 3% contribution vs. TX ~7%). And it seems the raise in SD is not that competitive either.

However, I do like the city a lot. It's so green and nice. Love the weather and the scenery! In this aspect, Texas is no where close.

Job wise, I think the San Diego one is a bit more stressful but I think I can manage to adapt.

I'm really torn here and need to make a quick decision. I would appreciate your insights.

Thanks

Those darn Texans!

Personally I wouldn't go to Texas for a job no matter how much they offer. I just don't like the place.

If you can make enough money in the SD job to afford to live here still then I see no problem.

There is no point to move to Texas for a higher paying job if you won't be happy there. I know people who made the move from California to Texas and they HATE it and want back asap.

I have heard from some friends that Austin is really bad ass and not stereotypical "texan"...whatever that means. But then there is the rest of Texas....I still am trying to wrap my head around the Texan pride thing.

Stress+Job= No Fun. Regardless of where you live. I love living here as do other posters on city-data san diego. One word of advice is, if you think work is going to be stressful here, then I say pass.
Nothing is worse than living in a place that you wont get to enjoy simply because the job has taken you over your life. You may be able to adapt for a year or two but I have seen it many times over and these people wind up hating SD or where ever else it was they "loved" just for the job.
Feeling like you cant leave your job because the job market stinks is not fun either especially when there are plenty of applicants lined up for your position.

At least in TX if there is no pressure, you can gain some experience at this position., then have a better point to choose later. SD will always be here....I think (sans the "big one")

I believe the OP indicated in another post that the other offer was in Houston, not my favorite Texas town. Stress is a big item to consider. What makes the SD. Job more stressful? Is it the Work or people? Conversely what is it about the Houston job, other than the money appeals to you?
There is no comparison between Houston and San Diego, one is big, flat and very urban; while SD offers a bit more variety in the topography and ambiance. Houston is no Austin, worlds apart.

Hmm, TX or San Diego, that's a tough one! Let's just say, you couldn't pay me to live in TX. Come to San Diego, the scenery is much prettier and we have better weather.

Sunshine Tax & Small City Discount in play; Houston is a big market with a lot of big business and will often beat a San Diego offer for the same job.

Ask the San Diego company to increase their offer. If they say they cannot you can always take the Texas offer. Understand that everything is negotiable. If they cannot increase salary, ask for more vacation, higher % of paid benefits, or an out of turn salary review. You are even welcome to tell them about the other offer. Just make sure you are willing to live in Texas.

Also what is the offer you are getting? The difference between 143K and 150K is not as noticeable as say 55K to 62K.

Keep in mind SD isn't always so green. We have had alot of rain this fall and winter. When we get back to our regular drought phase, all will turn brown and stay that way.

Everyone I know who lives/lived in Houston didn't like it, but it depends on how career oriented you are. It is a much better place to build a career and make money, and housing is way cheaper than SD.
Texas you will not pay state income tax so that should be consider in calculating your pay as well because you will be taking home considerable more because of that.

It depends on what your priorities are and how much the weather matters to you. If I were young and wanted to build a career for myself, I wouldn't choose SD. And keep in mind California is not business friendly, taxes are high.

Yup, I did ask them to increase the offer ... and they DID!!! Even though it's still a little bit less than the Texas' one, I think I'll accept it!
