I am looking for a cheap CAT5 crossover cable so that I can connect two laptops and transfer my data off my old laptop on to my new one.

Anybody know of any places in San Diego that have such a thing for cheap?

Fry's, Best Buy's, and that type of place don't seem to have it. Some small time network business might.

Short of calling all around I thought I would ask here first.

Thanks.

Carlos

I would bet Frys has a crossover cable. They have a huge cable area.

Here's an adapter on Amazon:

Hi Carlos ... glad to see you back at City-Data.

Hope you are managing well in San Diego.

Years ago, I bought a cat5 crossover cable at Staples for around $8. Not sure if they still sell them?

Another option is to transfer data using a USB thumb drive. They are pretty cheap these days.

Since you still appear to be budget conscious, consider going to Kobeys Swap Meet for purchases. They always have lots of used computer stuff (including cables) for extremely cheap prices. Kobeys is in the Sports Arena parking lot near Point Loma. They are open Fri, Sat and Sun 7am to 3pm. I recommend going on Sunday for the most vendors. Friday has the smallest number of vendors.

Also, in case you are browsing used cables at Kobeys - the way to tell a crossover cable from a regular cat5 cable, is the middle two colored wires are reversed on each plug. So one plug might be Green-Red-Yellow-Black and the other Green-Yellow-Red-Black. I don't remember the exact colors, but you get the idea.

CAT 5 Crossover = Fry's . Maybe Radio Shack, Office Depot, Best Buy, Wal-Mart or possibly Staples - but beware of skimpy return policies.

You need just a one-off cable, or are you planning on purchasing on a regular basis? I would actually check craigslist. I would post a CL ad here but I'm not sure if this forum allows it.

Thanks for the replies you all! Much appreciated.

I decided to transfer data with a 4GB flash drive. That worked out okay though it was a bit of a pain to keep track of what I transferred since the 4GB was not big enough to transfer everything over at once.

Anyway thanks again!

Carlos

I bought one at Office Max a couple years ago for less than $10.

I'm pretty certain Fry's has them too. I know they did about six years or so ago.
