if you have the money to go down to san diego, go ahead and have a blast and visit the city. this company is definitely a huge red flag though.

when i was living in san antonio last year, i applied for a job for "san antonio marketing". it seemed legit at first, and it was a similar entry level marketing position. one poster earlier said it right- it mainly would consist of setting up at retail stores (often not even allowed to) and trying to sell random things to customers that pass by your set up, which often will irritate them.

luckily, i was living in san antonio at that time, so it didn't cost me anything to fly, etc. when i went in for the interview, the office was in a 15 story building but their office in particular was run down, sketchy, and the front desk lady i remember having very messy hair and not looking professional at all. they called in me and 2 other candidates for a group interview, and here i was with a degree and customer service/marketing skills alongside someone who was currently unemployed, not college educated who had experience working in some food warehouse for tyson foods.

i went back home and looked them up to only find a lot of scam reviews. i got a call an hour later after the interview with them offering me a position. i never answered, and deleted their voicemail. i kept working hard and searching 'legitimate' marketing companies and came across a mobile marketing opportunity that had me traveling the united states this past year. i've made a few contacts in case you're interested in going in that direction of marketing, but just keep google searching marketing companies, there's stuff out there.

good luck, visit san diego, but skip that interview with that company. it wont be worth your time.

so are you still with that job, do you enjoy it? what do they get you to do? Do you think "legit" companies like that would take a Canadian?

The first problem I can see with what you're attempting to accomplish is that many of these jobs will not qualify you for a TN visa, which is based on professional experience in the same field as the one in which you are entering in the States. So if you have no appreciable professional managerial experience, you're not going to be granted a TN for a managerial position. Certainly in the example you gave, US immigration is almost certain to shoot down your application.

I find it highly unusual that the prospective employer wants you to fly down on your own dime for the first interview. That always happens over the phone. At least once, usually more than once.

There are red flags all over this. Remember that just like you, there are tens of millions of Americans who would love to land an entry level management job in San Diego. Given that and given the ~13% unemployment figures right now, if it sounds too good to be true then it is.

I am very impressed about this thoughtful feedback as well. Worst case scenerio will be if amber and dad have already got tickets, they can explore and have father daughter time.

I totally agree in this day and age with "if it sounds too good to be true" then it probably is. One of the companies I own is an investment company and I help manage money. I am lucky that I have a really interesting and diverse group of clients. A few of them are successful models in New York City. They told me some stories when they first started how they would hear about interesting high paying positions and "interviews". Only when they got there it was typically to do some soft core or hard core porn or other nude modeling...... or other freaky stuff.

While I'm sure you won't run into that type of problem with this company.... it still reminded me when I read "if it's too good to be true" then it is. Especially in this economy... unless you have tons of connections, a track record of amazing achievements and a lot of work experience. But that isn't the case from what you wrote.

Still, do post back what the answers are to those questions.... on Monday.

Also, it sounds like you definitely are going to head there and your family also enjoys it there. It's a great place to go for vacation. You live in Calgary which is a decent city. You might want to check into Home Exchanges. There are several in the San Diego area. Especially if you go down with your parents. We travel all over the year including every summer in La Jolla and swapped via sites like www.homeexchange.com so I thought at least I'd mention that so you could maybe spend more time there and not have to stay in hotels. We travel about 100+ days a year each year traveling around the world and always do home exchanges...it's GREAT! Lots in San Diego.

I've seen that website for Image Inc. before. I got some sort of email from them asking me if I'd like to interview a while back. It reeked of scamminess. DO NOT spend your hard earned money to fly down for an interview with that company.

Also, there are tons of MLMs around that you need to watch out for. The most popular one is the "College studens, earn $16.75 an hour part-time" one from Vector Marketing aka CUTCO. I did that thing when I was 18 and it was a scam. At least I got my $200 back that I paid for the dang knives though...and I learned how to cut a coke can with a knife.
