I'll be moving to CA in about 2 years after I finish some general courses in college. I plan on attending the University of San Diego and finishing my degree there. I am married with no kids, just dogs and I want to rent a house that isn't too far away from the college. I'm willing travel a little bit but not over an hour. (Normal figure, without traffic.) I know I really like the weather on the coast but it is more expensive. I definitely do not want to live in the valley further west where it gets 90+ degrees. I am, however, slightly interested in past the valley maybe in a mountain area that has better temperatures. A house of no less than 1400 sqft is what I need with a little land for my dogs. I know the coast would be ideal but I know that I would have to spend over 2k to get that kind of house if it is even possible. Can anyone suggest safe areas for me? Anyone ever heard of Pine Valley? Any thoughts?

Clairemont is fairly safe. This place is only a few miles north of USD:
Beautiful 2 story Home on the Lake! Hardwood Floors, Views! (http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/apa/2295233166.html - broken link)

Here's the map:

Pets will always limit your rental property selections. You'll just have to look for a place a little harder.

Any mountain area would be very far away from USD. Not sure what you are referrring to as the "valley area"... Pine Valley is a pretty far drive from USD as well. Also, in SD it gets hotter when you go east, not west (toward the ocean). Not sure where you're moving from but it's a common mistake lots of people make when they come here, getting their east and west mixed up.

There are lots of communities going out 8 East...I would suggest looking out that way and I'm sure you would find something. Your move is 2 years away so all you can really do now is research areas.
