I am trying to decide if I would like to stay in the Downtown HI hostel or the Point Lomo Hostel and was wondering if any one had any input about the areas or the hostels. I am not a party person but I do like the action of a downtown. But the Point Lomo hostel seems to be in a suburban type area. I think I am answering the question myself....but the Point Lomo hostel will run me $25 less for the week. And for that savings I can get 5 days of bus passes.

The Point Loma hostel is a little out of the way, as far as things go. It is an excellent place if you have a bike, and want to bike to the beach, Cabrillo National Monument, Sea World, Mission Bay or even the Zoo. But, in the evening, there is not much to do.

The downtown hostel is walking distance (2-3 miles) to the zoo, and the rest of Balboa park, but by bike, or whatever else, is farther away from the beach (although, the Pacific water is cold, so the beach is not as much fun as it may seem).

The bus to Point Loma is usually on schedule, but does not come often.

In the end, if you're a biker (bicyclist), and rent a bike, I'd recommend Point Loma. If you're a walker, and want to see Balboa Park and the Gaslamp, then downtown.
