Luckily we decided to avoid to huge crowds again that day (We headed to the fair and saw the lines at the exit backed up for at least a mile and went karting instead) We stayed local and enjoyed the fireworks in Escondido, I was home with a cold one in about 10 mins

I would have paid to see that! Firework shows are normally very boring - I've stopped going to them. You all are very lucky. The overcast clouds added even more to the effect by reflecting the light. Probably the closest you will come to seeing a nuclear explosion (hopefully!).

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I don't think it warrants its' own thread - what is with the throwing of marshmallows on the Fourth of July? A friend and I were watching the Ocean Beach fireworks and numerous people had brought bags of them to throw, and some were running around pelting people with them at full strength.

^^^This. The fact that it made national news is hilarious. I guess if it was just a neighborhood fireworks show, it wouldn't have been a big deal, but the fact that there were several hundreds of thousands of people lining the bay makes it newsworthy. Gotta admit, it was pretty funny.

I was a packed Bird Park on the the east side of Balboa Park, where we saw 2 of the 5 barges pre-ignite. Luckily, around the same time, we were able to see Coronado's go off without a hitch.

Welcome to OB! My friend was there and telling me that they were throwing marshmellows at the cops, and that they were cool about it. Try that in another city....

So it's just an OB thing? I wasn't sure if it was a CA thing or not - I've never heard of it.

I went there last year and my friend was so bummed that he didn't bring any marshmallows. It was funny, but I ruined a pair of shoes with sandy marshmallow crust that I couldn't get off. And it was just ridiculous. And then somebody's gotta clean it up the next day. I didn't feel like returning this year. I feel like a grumpy old woman now, "those dern kids and their marshmallows..." haha.
