What is your definition of "affordable"?

LOL. Yeah.... everything is relative when people throw out words like "affordable" in San Diego.

Still, I DEFINITELY believe the more expensive real estate here in San Diego is totally worth it. I LOVE this city. I've been to almost every state in the USA besides Alaska and 1 or 2 others. San Diego is paradise to me. I can't see ever moving out of this city.

Rancho Penasquitos (zip code 92129) will probably meet your requirements. Here's a typical family rental house in that area:
** Single Family Home in Park Village **

Yeah, I agree Rancho Penasquitos is a fine area for a family with good schools in the PUSD. We have several friends that live/rent there and they enjoy it.

You mentioned "large family". How many kids do you have and how many bedrooms do you need?

I think the areas around Rancho Penasquitos or Rancho Bernardo would be good and also 92127 if there is anything in that area in your price range. I'm not sure how many bedrooms you need. Most likely everything in 92130 (Carmel Valley) will be above your budget if you need something too large, but I'd also look and see if you can find a rental in your price range in that area. But the schools there are also excellent but pricey area.

I'm sure things are probably more affordable in Poway but that area is too hot and a bit too far out for my tastes but we have friends that live there and they really enjoy it. And it's more affordable.

For that rental budget, you might as well look around Encinitas/Carlsbad.
