Can't remember which road is the one with the desert overview (it's the road going north of Lake Cuyamaca, not south of it), but that is a great way to get back to I-8 and home. Also, there are fewer scars on the land (blackened trees) from the 2003 fire than on the southern road to I-8.
That would be 79, aka Sunrise Highway itself (at that stretch - farther south it splits off toward Cuyamaca while Sunrise Highway continues to Laguna).

The overview shortly south of Julian (Inspiration Point?) overlooks Banner Grade. If you take Sunrise Highway instead of staying on 79, there's another farther south which has a wooden platform. Along Sunrise Highway There's also the Desert View picnic area, which is a nice place to spend several hours, and slightly down its hill there's a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail that overlooks the desert. It'll take you back to I-8 at Pine Valley, which isn't far from where the 79 takes you to I-8.

Default Thinking of moving to San Diego

Hey there!
I'm Katie and I literally just signed up for city-data after reading your review about living in San Diego (which explains my totally incomplete profile). My wife and I live in MD and we are trying to find a west coast location to settled own. We have been looking into southern Oregon a lot - but that Southern California weather has always been seductive for me! I was hoping (since we too are 20something vegetarians who will be moving across country) we could chat more about your experiences to help us make better decisions for this transition!
I guess you could just reply to this post (I am completely unfamiliar with how this works - but hope to learn fast!) But I would love to open our communication to email as well.
Let me know if you'd be interested in helpings out! You sounds like a great resource for us!
Thanks
Katie
