Am I the only one bothered by the extremely low humidity?

Our two humidity sensors are showing 22% and 29% indoors. We are about 2 miles from the coast.

I often have difficulty sleeping during the winter: my throat and nose feel dry or something. Maybe it's the dust from the forced-air heating system?

Should I try to use a humidifier? They say they can be bad for your health.

We use a few humidifiers in the bedroom at night and that does the trick. I think the key is to wash the tank out regularly and we don't keep it on too much (only when we sleep) so mold/mildew doesn't become an issue.

The new modern ones are very quiet these days. I remember as a kid these things were really noisy. Now the ones out on the market are very silent. Bed, Bath and Beyond always has 20% off coupons on their website or they will email you them all the time if you sign up for their emails and they have several of them. We bought ours there.

Don't have issues with sleeping, but I do find myself using a lot of lip balm this time of year.

Yes, when it does drop the cold feels a little colder and the dry air can be irritating for some.

A humidifier will help, but as early retirement said, used in small doses so as not to create mildew issues.

To be extra nerdy about it, you could invest in a hygrometer to get the best range that is suitable to your needs once you get a humidifier. I believe some of the more expensive units have sensors built in as well.

Drink a ton of water. Use Ayr or another SALINE nasal spray (the kind that moisturizes your sinuses, NOT the kind for when you're stuffed up. That stuff is evil). Neti-pot if you're not too skeeved out by the idea. Drink a ton of water. Did I mention drink a ton of water?

That stuff can help a lot a lot. A humidifier would probably help you out as well, but you may not need it if you keep your mucous membranes moist.

lol please do . I lived on the gulf coast for a while a few years ago. I really miss that climate and humidity. Unfortunately jobs out there are hard to come by if you don't know someone (Or are from California).

Have people forgotten that it's typically this dry all across the country during this time of the year? Our dew point has creeped up to 22, from 13 degrees earlier today. Chapstick and Ayr are definitely my friends. One good thing about days like today is the great visibility outside. Driving around today, you can easily see the snow-covered mountains to the north.
