Let's assume for a moment that money isn't an object--say you won tonight's lottery or something.

What are the top 5 nicest, most generally desirable (demographically I'm mid-40's with pre-teen kids) communities in the SD area.

It looks to me that Rancho Santa Fe is very nice. Also maybe Santaluz? Obviously the waterfront properties are all going to be very expensive/desirable, but I'm thinking I might like more space (houses on an acre or so at least ideally).

Is RSF #1? Is Santaluz generally considered #2? Need some advice from locals before engaging a local realtor--thanks.

Honestly, if I won say 300 Million (after all the money is taken from taxes, lottery, etc), I'm not even sure I'd move anywhere. I'd make sure my kids were taken care of, my family, pay off all my bills, invest, and then I'd just buy a large sail boat, hire somebody, and travel the world. Stopping at various ports. Work odd jobs. Join the peace corp. Things like that.
but that's just me.

If I wanted to buy a house, I'd probably make a choice between Del mar on the beach, Coronado, or go down to Malibu.

To me, hands down, La Jolla. You've got some very expensive houses in many other places, but to me, being able to smell that ocean air and see it from your home, well, if money was no object, that's where I'd be.

Money no object, I'd be somewhere on the beach with an unobstructed view and no nearby neighbors. LaJolla, DelMar...

The latest Dataquick sales transactions for April 2013 lists the top five communities in San Diego County that command the most per square foot, making them the most in demand places to purchase homes:

1. Coronado-$763/square foot
2. La Jolla-$633/square foot
3. Rancho Santa Fe-$495/square foot
4. Del Mar-$490/square foot
5. Solana Beach-$469/square foot

Rancho Santal Fe has larger homes and lots, making their overall prices the most expensive. If you want a house on at least one acre, Rancho Santa Fe is your best bet, preferrably The Convenant to be closer to the coast. Be forwarned that it's a real challenge to find fire insurance in RSF, you'll be paying a huge water bill (unless you want desert landscaping), and a lot of homes have septic tanks due to their isolated location. Oops, forgot for a moment that money is no object, just buy a new home if it burns down.

Couldn't say as we don't have kids, but so far all the most obvious places listed above sound like the trend each with their own benefits.

How about Olivenhain if you like having some space? What kind of enviroment would work best for your kids? Considering their age is that a factor to consider?

Assuming money is no object, I doubt you'd be worried about the water bills! LOL.

Seriously though if money was no object, I'd stay right in my same development of Santaluz. I'd probably buy a bigger lot and then build a custom home. But we LOVE it here.

We originally were going to buy a house in La Jolla but I'm SO glad we decided to buy where we did. The weather is so much nicer without the marine layering of La Jolla.

Rancho Santa Fe is really nice but much of it has too much of a rural or isolated feel to it to me. To me the quality of life doesn't get much better than Santaluz.

Of course if I won the lottery tonight I'd probably get a beach house as well but we love where we live and for raising kids it's hard to beat here in this community. Something like 58% of the residents here have kids under 15 years old here.

Yeah with a Top 5 list, its not really a top 5 in that 1 is better than 4. Imho its all personal preference at that point.
You have to see for your self which works best or buy/build the best house in each area and pick for yourself with that kind of dough

Coronado
Mission Hills
Pt Loma
RSF
Del Mar

I guess La Jolla gets the honorable mention for me...anything on Mt Soledad's western face is money.
