Everytime I cross over the bridge my palms begins to sweat, feel real nervous like I want to stop while driving. I never want to drive over that bridge again. Does anyone else feel this way while driving? What causes this to happen?

No I don't react like that.

What causes it? I dunno. Fear of heights? Fear that you'll suddenly be consumed by an irresistible compulsion to drive off the edge?

Yeah, DH readily admits to more than a touch of fear of heights. It gets him on those fly-over lands, on the high bridges on I-8, and occasionally if we're hiking up one of the more challenging mountain trails. What causes it? I dunno, except that I have medical phobia. Dunno what caused that (though I have an idea or two). It just is. And it's annoying!

Yes. I think it is how that bridge is configured that accentuates its height without much of a fence between roadway and bay and also the driving lanes are pretty narrow. On the other hand, the view is one of the bests.

My Dad freaks out going over the bridge. Doesnt like it at all for all the reasons mentioned.

Reason unknown.

Methinks perhaps there is point of reference going up the bridge higher than the bridge itself, its just road and sky up until mid point as well as the degree of the slope which is rather drastic. Whereas some other cable type bridges give a feeling of some enclosure or reference as mentioned and their slopes are not as severe?
Plus there is no shoulder to give the feeling of mass under the vehicle.

My Hawaiian friends were visibly shaking as I drove over the Coronado Bridge. There aren't many bridges on Oahu.

Driving across the Coronado Bridge is one of my favorite routes. You get a great view of the city and harbor!

I've got no fear of heights, but if I'm driving I have to keep my eye mostly on the road. My wife makes me take the lane furthest from the side because she is terrified.

I also love the fact that there are no more tolls.

It's totally the lack of "barriers" between the cars and the side combined with the height. The view really is nice, but I too get that chilled (as in cold and shivering, not as in relaxed) feeling when crossing over the bridge. Ferry's better.

What you are describing is more common than you might think. A pal worked with a therapist, even walking across bridges! He got over it for the most part.

What is disturbing is that some bridges are in need of maintenance and attention.
