I lived near a new enormous Wegmans in Md....was the best grocery store ever. Then moved Florida where I heard that Publix was awesome....Publix stinks! High prices, bad produce and their own brand is awful quality.
So now I have to go to about 5 different places for a weekly shop. Trader Joes, Super Walmart, Costco and farmers market.
Please tell me SD has a great grocery chain....esp interested in Gluten Free and vegan but not Whole Paycheck aka Whole Foods

We do the same thing you do...go to a few places. Costco, Trader Joes, Whole foods (they aren't that bad if you buy their brand) and Sprouts.

Have you tried Sprouts? They have a lot of gluten free products, but prices vary. Their produce is cheaper, but I don't like the quality of it. They have stores in North Park, Point Loma, Clairemont, Santee and Chula Vista.

There's a Jimbos in Horton Plaza but they are as expensive or more expensive than Whole Foods.

Thanks...Sprouts looks like its up my alley I try to avoid Wmart too but the gluten free thing is hard, you have to get it wherever you can.
Cheers!

There's also Jimbo's, but their prices are pretty much in-line with Whole Foods if you ask me.

If you happen to be in the Clairemont section of SD at any point, try Zion Supermarket at the corner of Clairemont Mesa Blvd and Convoy St.

It's a very large Asian supermarket, with great prices on fresh produce.

Sprouts (Produce)
Trader Joes (Snacks, Frozen Items)
Vons (Dairy and Bakery)

Those are the ones I use. Von's regular prices can give you some shock but it can be surprisingly affordable if you clip coupons and sign up for their Just for you online coupons.

My loop is to hit Walmart first, Fart and Smile then Rite Aid on the way home. Done.

I second Spouts. I go there all the time for organic produce although the selection can be small. Quality also varies depending on the location, but overall, they have a great selection of Gluten Free products, vitamins/nutritional supplements, etc. at affordable prices. It's like Whole Foods without the whole paycheck. Also check out their bulk bins. There is one in Carlsbad!

Sprouts & Baron's is fantastic as well. Not sure how many locations for Baron's there are, but the produce is extremely cheap. Great salad bar as well.
