Hey everyone! I am in San Diego visiting while looking for apartments and attending job interviews for a big move in March. I found a great apartment community called Nobel Court in the UTC/La jolla area. I am overwhelmed with all of the neighborhoods here and not sure where to look. So far, I like UTC/La Jolla because its close to running trails, beach, I-5, and shops. I wanted to know if this neighborhood is good? Any other neighborhoods to suggest? I would like to live close to the Interstate and be close to restaurants, parks, shops, etc. My boyfriend and I are young professionals so places like PB would not be an option because we want something more relaxing and not party driven. Thanks!

I spent 10 years in the UTC area before my son was born. For young professionals it is a great neighborhood. Close to all, including the freeways and away from the PB or downtown crowd.

PB is only party driven on Garnet. When you get up on streets like Diamond, Tourmaline, Beryl, etc, it is a great small community.

I like UTC for the university feel, newness, etc, but it also feels very sterile to me.

Where are you going to school and what kind of jobs will you be looking for? UTC is a great area as it has a lot of young professionals, UCSD college students(who are far different than SDSU students), and you have easy access to freeways and various locations across San Diego. But it will depend on where you work and go to school.

jeez, the only thing to complain about this area is the high housing costs, and that's because it's one of the best places to live in town. and as for sterile? maybe due to the nearby biotech start ups, or maybe just the lack of 99percenters

Well, to be fair, most SD suburbs are 'sterile'. That's true of southern CA as a whole. It's essentially a sprawling series of suburbs. And suburbs are often characterized as sterile.

OP: I think a main concern in UTC is which complexes are more like college dorms-with partying, etc.
UCSD students may be different than SDSU, as someone commented, but I know for a fact that some sections/complexes in UTC are pretty loud. So check reviews online, walk around the complex on a weekend night [ie, around 9 or 10 pm] and just ask around in general. Make sure it's a professional or family complex, unless you specifically want a party place, of course.

As for PB-you have to go quite a few streets over to remove yourself from the parties, and many complexes, houses, duplexes, etc there are quite loud at night. Lots of house parties, too! It's not just garnet ave, that's FOR SURE. UTC is nice b/d you are centrally located to many areas of SD, without being stuck in PB or other areas that are difficult to access [traffic, one road in and out, etc].
