San Diego is not a racially biased area. From my observations all over the United States, San Diego is one of the most accepting and diverse areas. Color isn't an issue in the professional or dating arena.

I've lived in three states in the past 10 years: Chicago, San Diego and now Philly. In 5 years in SD I had one racist comment said to my face, saw lots of interracial couples. In 7 months in Philly I've had 6 comments about either blacks or jews. SD is laid back, more interested if you own a home than your race/religion. Philly is REALLY racist and I want to get outta here before my son starts picking up that attitude.

Don't worry about racism anywhere you go, wether it be SD or where ever...just be yourself...and don't listen to the haters. They are just insecure or unhappy with their life.
I lived in Miami for awhile and I saw too much racism...way too much and a lot of it was directed at me. I am not black, I am white. So whoever you are and whatever you are it dosen't matter...there will be rude people.
Like a lot of people have already said I don't think you will have to worry about it.

sometimes people just cant help but to play the part of their own "stereotypes" because, they just dont know(and/or they dont know that they are doing it). simple as that.
Adults don't necessarily have to worry about themselves, it's their kids they need to be concerned about. I can feel their pain. My son's half b/w and I am strongly living in SD, but don't want to be worried about racial slurs being said towards myself or even my son. I've heard some of the best places for schools are in Poway and RB, and then I just read what Sassberto posted and feel like I'm back to the drawing board. It's really pathetic that it's going on to such extremes in those schools.

Question Is it really racism?

I think a lot of times when incidents occur and go unquestioned, their intent is often misunderstood.

I'm not saying that racism doesn't exist, but today, I think our society is overly sensitive and somethings are not "racism" some comments made are not "racist."

In reading the articles from last year, it appears that after investigating the incidents, that the intention of them was not to harm anyone. Too often we claim "racism" when in fact it is a misunderstanding.

I am African-American, grew up in a predominatly white town, went to school with mostly white children - over 90% - and truly never experienced anything that was hateful with regard to race. Actually, because of my complexion, many more blacks questioned my ethnicity than non-blacks. They couldn't understand how a black person could be fair and not be bi-racial. It was just ignorance. As an adult, it's been the opposite - more non-blacks question it.

In short, I don't think San Diego is much different from any major California cities with regard to race. People will be people, and trying to avoid certain types will prove futile every time.

Yes, but I don't think having a swastika and white robes can be "misunderstood". Even as a white person, that disgusts me.

I agree with Jaded, I am Mexican/Filipino but look 100% latino and grew up in a white upper middle class suburb around all white kids and never experianced racism up in the Bay Area or down here. Whenever I hear people that may at first sound like they are racist or prejudice but it's really class , cultural and income differences they describing and they know it. I'm not trying to get into a big race discussion but I think most of the problems are really cultural and socioeconomic differences over anything else.

I grew up in the Bay Area, which prides itself on it's diversity, acceptance, and tolerance and every now and then, not often at all, someone would spray paint a swastika or some other racial slur/epithet somewhere. Racism here isn't any worse than anywhere else in CA, even the Bay ARea, the self proclaimed capital of diversity, tolerance, and acceptance. lol

Is this a real problem in SD?
I live in NJ and racial profiling is a very big problem here and will always be here no matter what.
