Drive down to San Diego airport and pick him up, at his age he shouldn't be driving long distances, but you don't want to hurt his feelings so just tell him you know the area better and it would be easier for the two of you to car pool. Besides, it will save him money and allow him to relax on his vacation. WRT a restaurant why not try the Stone Brewery and Beer gardens in Escondido? Both the food and beer are good, the prices are reasonable, and the gardens are quite nice plus it isn't far from your house in Fallbrook.

Even easier than John Wayne and certainly SAN or LAX. Pricing will likely depend on using the same airline to fly to Palomar which appears to be only United at this point.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

I doubt he'll be able to get a direct flight and the short connection will likely cost hundreds as that is a small airport. Just have him fly nonstop to SAN and pick him up there. It's only a 45 minute drive from Fallbrook and it will save the elderly man several hundred dollars.

Actually, I checked United's website using an couple of example flights in September and it was about $50 cheaper to fly to Palomar through LAX than a non-stop to SAN.

Huh. My dad is a very seasoned flyer, I will have to present these options to him. He actually tolerates flying better than me, he might not be averse to a flight to LAX then catching a hopper plane to Carlsbad. He can fly out of Newark so that connection to John Wayne isn't a bad one either. He will be flying on mileage so the cost is not as much of an issue. Thanks for your help.

Also seafood, he likes seafood. Not sushi, but good, fresh fish. He's an excellent cook himself, the kind of places he favors are as I said not the $50 for a plate of beets type of LA restaurant, but more the interesting cuisine in a storefront parking lot. I plan to take him to Hillcrest and Balboa park as Olmstead did Central Park.

Keep the food suggestions coming, for myself as well as my dad, I like Urbnz in Vista, but am always open to good brunch places, pizza places, Thai, Chinese, Mexican and oh yeah....DESSERTS!
Thanks guys!
