I'm currently in Arizona, but because of family issues, I do not know how long I will be staying here.

I know this has been asked before, but every situation is different, so I would like to ask anyhow..

With a budget of about $250,000 to spend towards a home, what areas in or around San Diego would I be able to afford a home? That are still safe with little crime?

Is this even reasonable or is this a pipe dream?

Its reasonable as long as its a condo. A house is not going to happen on a 250k budget or else everyone would live here.

Do a search on Zillow or Trulia for homes in San Diego with the upper limit of $250K. Your best bet in this price range is a condo and there are many available for this price. If you don't have to worry about kids going to school then your selection of areas at this price point is not bad.

A house is extremely unlikely. At least, not one that is safe and livable.

Ok.. So then if I'm perfectly ok with a condo, then my budget can get me in a safe part of town?

And other than directly in San Diego, are there any surrounding cities that are also safe, that I would be able to find a condo with my price range?

La Mesa, Spring Valley, El Cajon, are some surrounding areas.
Go to Realtor.com and punch in your price point, then come back on with some address and then we can comment on good/bad neighborhoods.

hitman named you some of the south and east surrounding areas. In the northeast are Poway, Ramona, Escondido, Vista, San Marcos. North, along the coast, are several more areas but I'm pretty sure they'd be beyond your budget even for a condo.

This is what I was thinking, as well. Of course, the further you go out, the chance becomes greater of finding something in your price range. But the commute will be a bear. Where will you be working?
