San Francisco has hot weather typically in July - October, similar to San Diego.

I'd say San Francisco hot weather is more September- October. The intense heat of the inland areas of the Bay Area tend to suck in the fog in the city in the summer. I've been in 97° in Healdsburg in August and later in the evening in the fog and 50°s in the City wearing a (borrowed) jacket and uncomfortably cold!

I'll be at the hospital and would prefer to keep my commute to a minimum. I'm beginning to think I may just have to postpone the search until I arrive.
The address I posted is the most walkable area in San Diego, San Carlos/Navajo.
Cowles mountain is across the street and a half mile down the road is Lake Murray

All the Areas I mentioned are either walkable or have some type of trails. El Cajon is the only area where you may have to travel a little to get to a trail.
I Also forgot to mention Santee. Lots of nice new Military housing in Santee, with long waiting list

I think when the op describes walkable he is not talking about hiking. The suburb of San Carlos is not known as "the most walkable area of San Diego". If you are living without a car in San Carlos you are probably hating life. And he also complains about lack of stimulation, he's not gonna find that where you are suggesting

You can find cottages for less, but the neighborhood won't be as nice. When you start looking, make sure that you have assigned parking, or there's plenty of parking. City parking can be very scarce.

Lake Murray is not walkable?
San Carlos is Not walkable?
I Drive down Jackson every morning after dropping my daughter of at school to get work.
There must be at lease 30 people I see regularly, power walking though the side streets of San carlos to walk to Lake Murray.
There may not be many bars and hot spots in San Carlos but I can assure you its pretty walkable!

Edit:
I also walk Lake Murray twice a month with my dog!

No true at all. First of all, only inland in San Diego or the Bay Area will see hot temps (90F and above). Secondly the Bay Area in summer is overcast, windy and maxes out at 65F, often times even cooler than that. In September and October you will see sunny days in the 70sF and every now and then you may also get periods of rare sunny and warm weather. But there is a reason for the Mark Twain quote "the coldest winter I ever experienced was a summer in San Francisco".

Look up the temp averages yourself if you do not believe me. I was there last August-it was overcast for most of the day and only reached 55F. Plus, windy from the ocean.

I am no hiker . While I do own a car, I would like to be within walking distance of a grocer, retail, dry cleaners, etc...

These areas may be good for walking but they are not walkable, if that makes sense. Walkable means that many of life's daily errands can be accomplished on foot or with public transit, such as grocery shopping, going out to eat, commuting, getting coffee etc. In my opinion, the only areas that realistically meet this need are the areas by Balboa Park and downtown as well as Little Italy. Anyway, check out the web site Find Apartments for Rent and Rentals - Get Your Walk Score and that will give you a realistic view of an area's walkability. I find it's pretty accurate in San Diego.

Bear in mind what others have said about the job market, it is NOTHING like the DC area. San Diego is a great place, wonderful people, laid back, beautiful weather. I've been eyeing a move back but unfortunately, I was just offered a position there making HALF of what I make in NYC, which is a complete joke. I also received an offer 30% above my NYC salary in San Jose and I am seriously considering that. I do dislike car dependent suburbs and I think San Jose is actually worse than San Diego, but we will see.

There is pubic Transportation in San Carlos, Grossmont college is right over the hill
Although Downtown and Balboa park are great areas to walk for food, how walkable is it for grocery stores?
Would Ralphs,Albertsons and whole foods be in walking distance of a $1600 a month cottage in downtown
Edit:
And safe
I know what the O.P. meant I was just giving him some other options.
As Life Long San Diegan Life Does exist Outside of Golden Hill, North park, Hillcrest, South Park (my old neighborhood), Mission Hills, Poway, San Marcos.
