So I have two rings, one in white gold with a CZ (a cheap engagement ring) and one older diamond and gold ring that was given to my mother just a couple years before her divorce (so it has no sentimental value) that I was hoping to exchange for an engagement ring of a specific style. Are there any decent jewelry stores in San Diego that either buy rings or take them in exchanges to help defray the cost of a new one?

Does Zales, Robbins Brothers or another chain do anything like that? Any small family-run jewelry stores like that?

I'm hoping to find one centrally located, I live in Bay Park (South Clairemont) and work in Del Mar, so preferably one that's not in the Chula Vista, San Marcos or Santee/Lakeside areas.

I have done business with Leo Hamel Co in the past and they are reputable. They buy and sell. With that being said, they are in the business of making money and have to make a profit on what they sell, so don't expect to get what you expect selling or trading in your rings. But then again, you won't have to sell them yourself on ebay or craigslist.

I don't think the CZ is worth anything except the gold value of the ring. Who knows what the other ring is worth, an old diamond is just as valuable as a new diamond.

You might want to try Unicorn in Rancho Bernardo. They have been there for many years and are a family owned outfit.

I think they'd be more flexible than the chains.
