That does a pretty decent job of outlining my observations over the past decades. There's a lot of cool stuff going on there right now that most people act like they don't believe is happening because of their dead-set notion of what Tijuana is, based on 20 years ago and never actually having set foot across the border.

^^^ Neon 5K Run was tonight. I went out to dinner in Zona Rio this Saturday evening and was completely caught of guard by the hundreds or thousands of people that took to the street on Paseo de los Hereos for the run and were still hanging out at 11 PM well after the run.

Always something going on in TJ, long gone are the days of the tourists in flip flops and cargo shorts strolling up and down Revo on a Saturday. They were good days while they lasted, but those days are over and TJ is a better more authentic Mexican city for it. There are still crowds on Revolucion on weekend evenings, just not the same crowds we saw 10 years ago which were even different from the ones from 20 years ago.

tourists not going to Tijuana anymore and the drug violence were like a blessing in disguise- it made locals look inward instead of outside. I love that something positive can come out of chaos. The focus on building the artistic and culinary culture in Tijuana and even Baja California has been great and has contributed to the economic development of the city and the region.

I was in Ensenada/Valle de Guadalupe this weekend with an American friend who had never been. She was truly impressed by the artistic/scientific/culinary scenes in Ensenada. She said it seemed like the city was very progressive. Hopefully, BC can continue to develop in that fashion.

Nice to see TJ receiving some props in recent years. If SD doesn't up its game, we might be riding their coattail soon

The best thing that happened to Tijuana is when gringos stopped going down and the military was banned. TJ is now mainly a locals place and the few gringos who do go there are far more interesting than the average joe who was there 10/20 years ago.

Don't get me wrong bad stuff still happens down there but to those in the know TJ can be an amazing experience.

I just spent ***7 weeks down there

My only concern is for the locals who depend on the tourist dollars. They are suffering and I am sorry to see it. You will find some of the most genuine people that you will ever met in TJ. My heart goes out to them.

Great new article from San Diego Magazine about Baja cuisine and wines....and word of Javier Plascencia plans to open a new spot in Little Italy in 2015....for the Tijuanaphobes--no worry, it's safe to go...Ebola and Isis are not waiting for you at the border....plus I can always smoke a good (and real) Cuban at La Casa del Habano.

That was a great article.

I just discovered a great little French restaurant in Ensenada called El Rey Sol. I was there with a friend of mine who lived years in Paris. We stopped by for pastries and coffee- the pastries were so fresh and perfect. All of these years going to Ensenada I walked by this place and never knew.

There are definitely some hidden gems in Baja CA. Can't wait for Javier Plascencia's new place in Little Italy.

Good friends of mine own the Castillo del Mar Hotel in Rosarito...nice, intimate option on top of bluffs overlooking the ocean that remind me of Sunset Cliffs.
