i just said a few things like 'buenos dias, como le va' (good morning, how are you etc.).

i got answered with a dirty look and in english: "i'm fine."

so i tried a few more words; same result.

i had to conclude that she was trying to prove something, that she speaks english and she was very defensive about it.

what do you think?

What i think is that the vast majority of your communication with a California Latino need to be in English first with a little Spanish sprinkled in here and there.

Now if you are a white or black Latino and fit into that culture that's a totally different thing.

I think you're trolling.

I think if you got the same result even with different phrases, then "I'm fine" must be the only two english words she knows.

How did you determine she was a Latina? How did you determine she was Spanish speaking?

It sounds like profiling. Some people will ignore it, others will be offended that you assumed they didn't know english. It's about building rapport.

If some white guy walks in and starts pretending they know Spanish, you already assumed they aren't from the US and don't know english or don't know it well. Wonder why they didn't really like you.

I'm not sure why you would assume she prefers to speak Spanish in the first place, especially if she is younger.

Also keep in mind that there are a lot of, 3rd/4th generation Hispanics here in San Diego that don't speak Spanish.
