Forgot how good this movie was. So many stars. Glad they never tried to remake it.

I was just entering my teens when it came out and I really loved it start to finish. In the theaters it was a Cinerama release which made going seem more like a special event.
When I went back to see it for a second time I noticed something. When Jimmy Durante dies on the hillside, his body goes stiff and one leg jerks out and knocks a bucket further down the hill. Pretty much everyone in the theater felt compelled to turn to their neighbor and say "He kicked the bucket" as if expecting that the seatmate failed to pick up on this.
I went back for a third viewing while it was still in its first run and sure enough, same thing. Durante's foot goes out and you see people all over the theater leaning over and whispering to their seatmates.

The Simpsons parody of the film was one of the greatest moments on the show...

Unfortunately, they did:
"In 2001, Stanley Kramer’s It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World was remade into a clumsy comedy called Rat Race by Jerry Zucker."

That's a good way to describe it, clumsy. It had a few good moments, but I thought the ending was terrible.

I did love the part with Kathy Bates selling squirrels dressed up in clothing.

Kids liked the movie. My daughter was around ten at the time. It certainly wasn't comparable to the original.

Loved this movie. I was in Long Beach as a kid when they filmed it there. Absolutely shut down the entire city. Watched in the Cinerama in LA when it opened. Every single comedian of the time was in it. Just a great comedy.

One of the funniest movies I ever saw. With a truly all-star cast.
