Grocery prices shouldn't be any higher in San Diego than in Chicago. Actually, much of the good we eat comes from California, so those items might be cheaper in San Diego. Lettuce, tomato, avocados, etc.

Once you solve your housing problem, the rest is a piece of cake.

Hillcrest is not a bad area and about 7 mi to Ocean Beach. Yes you can get a studio at Hillcrest for about $1200/mo that might be decent. As long as you can deal with only having around 500 sq ft.
