Opt_10:

San Diego will try to keep Comic Con in San Diego for as long as they possibly can. The event is a cash cow for the city proper and outlying areas in ways you apparently are unable to fathom. No other event held at the Convention Center all year long brings in anywhere near the same amount of people. Every hotel and motel is sold out many months in advance. Plus, other events pop up downtown that are not sanctioned by Comic Con, but suck people in like a Hoover nonetheless.

Yes, Comic Con has considered moving to cities like Los Angeles (which now has Wonder Con and Stan Lee's Comikaze) and Las Vegas (that would be a bad move, and LV has a con now) in the past, but San Diego has managed to hold on to it. They added Hall H to the Convention Center, too, along with programming extending to the Omni and other hotels.

Seriously, the San Diego Con (before it was called SDCC) was born in San Diego, and it should remain there. Moving to LA would be a bad idea. Long Beach now was two sister cons, the LB Con and LB Comic Expo, annually.

"If it ain't broke..."

During the period of time that Comic Con is here, most of the businesses lives revolve around it. They'll adjust their hours, and do whatever it takes to have some of the Comic Con business.

People come from all over for Comic Con. People that can't afford a place to stay, will pitch a tent on the Convention Center grounds, or sleep in their car.

That's too funny! Comic Con causes an inconvenience for you, but apparently not enough of an inconvenience to call or write. Sounds like you're fine with it after all!

While the OP's arguments of personal inconvenience are a non-starter, it would make sense to move Comicon to an off-peak part of the year.

Right now, the hotels say they would be full in July even without Comicon because it's beach season. Therefore, why not move the convention to an off-peak time so they can sell rooms that otherwise would be vacant.

Out of town attendees might favor a time move, because the hotels might offer room discounts to them. Comicon attendees, being that they are unemployed college graduates living in their parent's basements don't have the money for full price expensive hotel rooms. (j/k about the basement dwelling stereotype but they wouldn't mind cheaper room rates.)

And for most months of the year, San Diego's weather is still likely to be better than where they are coming from. Having the convention in March wouldn't be the same as having a golf tournament in Fairbanks in January.

What's the demographic of attendees? If it's mainly kids still in school, then it would make most sense to have it in the summer when classes are out.

The demographic is 5 to 80. No joke! Seriously, there are many people in their 40s and 50s who attend as there are twentysomethings and thirtysomethings.

Some interesting demographics about SD Comic Con here: A media buyer's guide to Comic-Con - Media Life Magazine

Quote: "The average attendee is a male ages 16 to 34."

So, yeah, having in the summer makes sense of a significant portion of attendees are high school and college age.

Obviously, however, there are plenty of people of all ages who go downtown to gawk and maybe even attend one of the days. But, the die hards, the folks who are actually inside the convention center for all or most of Comic Con, are probably not 80 year olds. If no other reason that 80 year olds don't have the stamina.

"5 to 80" was obviously an exaggeration. My aim was to dispel the notion that only "college age" persons are attending the Con, "unemployed basement dwellers" and gainfully employed loft loungers and homeowners alike.

They should rename it "virgins convention" or "basement dwellers convention"
