We went to Extraordinary Desserts in Banker's Hill and they have a new sign up. They are charging a 4% "NPI" tax. When I asked what NPI was, I was told it was a "No Price Increase" tax. They explained that due to the minimum rate hike, they wanted to put this tax on instead of raising prices.

So I guess calling it a "NPI tax" and charging an extra 4% on all items is different than raising the price by 4% on all items.

Some are not surcharging, but I noticed a hike in other things like iced tea, one place I frequent went from $2.50 to $3.50 since the new year for a iced tea, refllls included. I'm going to not frequent this place too often anymore.

So even if they are not noting "3%" like Sammie's, they are getting it another way by raising prices.

Did anyone believe the would not do this? The money has to come from... the public who goes to such establishments. Businesses will not just take it from their own pockets.
