It may be too late to tell you this, but there is a San Diego Visitor Center located in Mission Bay, right near where I-5 meets Clairemont Drive. It's a round building with a dome.

You can see it on this Google Map:

2688 E Mission Bay Dr San Diego, CA 92109 - Google Maps

They have a good free coupon book inside (actually just a magazine), with savings to most San Diego attractions. You probably can use it to get into the Zoo for around $18. There are also attendants who work inside who can also give useful advice.

Darnit... if I would have know I could get into the zoo for 18 bucks ... I would have gone. I leave tomorrow.
