I am hoping to move back to California and I was wondering if there are any nice areas in the Southern part of California that are relatively affordable. We live in the South East right now, so the price difference is a little shocking. Any advice would be great. We are looking to rent an apartment or house right now, not really looking to buy but we might consider if anyone has any advice on that as well.

you really need to give us a price range...then we can be more helpful. As far as southern california goes...the cheapest places are usually farther away from the big cities...and farther from the coast. Like hemet for example.

Affordable meaning...not more than $1000 a month, which might be impossible...maybe a little over $1000 but $1400 is a little out of our price range for now. And no I don't have to live in a big city, but I would like to be within 30 minutes of one and about an hr or less to the beach.

1k/mo in SoCal within 30 minutes of the beach = tiny studio apartment or living in the ghetto

View Shasta Lane Apartments Apartments For Rent in La Mesa, California - ForRent.com
Shasta Lane Apartments Ratings, Reviews, Map, Rents, and other La Mesa apartments for rent from ApartmentRatings.com

I don't think that NW La Mesa qualifies as ghetto.

No, that is a nice area but if I remember correctly, those apts are really beat up and nasty looking. But its got good ratings on apt. ratings. so you'd need to physically check it out

Try looking in el cajon. I rented a 2 bedroom in a nice complex for about a 1,000 a month. This was a couple years ago, so rents may have gone up since then...but at that time there were cheaper places we looked at also. You could also try vista...that is a nicer area and still a lot of apartments, you might be able to find something small.

Default Temecula

Temecula is close to San Diego and LA, you can get to the beach in about 40 minutes and you get way more bang for your buck than anywhere in SD or LA.
