Hello San Diego,

Coming From San Diego we purchased on Whidbey Island. Considered Seattle but wanted the rural environment. After 5 months of items in both areas, here is a short list. I go to Seattle 3x week for work.

Our condo in San Diego 3/2 1200sq was $3k/month. 2 car garage 10 miles to beach.

Our home here is 2100 sq feet 3/2 + 800 sq feet of outdoor decking 4 car garage on .7 acre with view of the bay beach within walking distance.

Here's the List of What's Cheaper.

Housing. 23%
Gasoline 15%
Fish way less
groceries 9%
dining out 14%
utilities 18%
State Tax 100%
Garbage 30%
Water 40%

Here is a List of What's More Expensive

Veterinarians 20%
home/car insurance 50%
parking Seattle 20%
Housecleaning 15%
sales tax 3% includes items not taxed in California

Any questions please ask on specific items.

Comparing Whidbey Island in relation to Seattle would be like comparing San Diego in relation to Corona.

You couldn't wait to leave SD and now you're back to compare it to a place no one here cares about? Move on already. Anyone interested in Whidbey Island would naturally post something in the Washington thread and ask for information there. Time to forget about this place and enjoy your new home.

How can this even be a comparison? You have to take a ferry ride from Whidbey with long, long car waits and that only puts you in Mukilteo which is at least an hour by car from Seattle at traffic time. I guess you could drive all the way around and catch the 5 at Mt Vernon but that would have to be at least 2.5 hours one way.

How much does the ferry cost? It has to be at least $40 a day, for driver and vehicle? Even if you only did the commute three days a week that is an almost additional $500 cost?

Here would be some much more equivalent comparisons:

Bellevue - Scripps Ranch
Sammanish - Poway
Whidbey Island - Ramona (somewhat of a stretch because Ramona is a much easier commute to job centers)
Greenwood - North Park
Mercer Island - La Jolla

Schools are mostly much better in California than Washington state, due mostly to income taxes, as are services overall. My hunch is you moved from a place like Scripps Ranch to Whidbey, is comparing the school systems there really fair?

You've always been rude. I am offering comparisons for others who may be thinking about relocating. That was, apparently lost on you....no surprise there. I'm here Huckleberry. Any place Any time.

Again, another poster who reveals the exact reason that I did not like San Diego.

Actually I didn't until I read some of the responses which despite my intent want to be caustic. It's so refreshing to have left you all in the dirt and heat.
