We are thinking of checking out Whidbey to live. Is the southern part in the "rain shadow"? Also, are the southern towns in the flight path of the noisy jets?

South Whidbey is a great place. Coupeville, which is a bit farther north would be your best bet for rain shadow on Whidbey. Homes are very affordable compared to the Seattle side. Here is the rain shadow map:

South Whidbey and North Whidbey have very different vibes. The area around Deception Pass is wild, inspiring and beautiful, the area near Oak Harbor has a strong military presence (with the Whidbey Naval Air Station) and lots of commercial development. South Whidbey is very different, the areas around Langley and Freeland have almost a counterculture feel (artists, musicians, organic farmers). Double Bluff Beach on South Whidbey is stunningly beautiful.
