A Target Express store is going to open up in North Park, where Wangs used to be.

This new store will probably be a plus for North Park and surrounding areas, although I'm sure some won't like the idea of it. When my daughter lived in that area, one of her big complaints was the lack of nearby shopping; driving down to Mission Valley all of the time got old. As I said, though, I'm sure some won't like the idea of it.

Here are the yelp reviews for the Target Express in Southpark which used to be either a Foodland or an IGA. Looks like folks biggest complaints are the prices are a bit higher than a normal Target. I haven't stepped into one yet, I imagine it is like a CVS, Rite Aid or Walgreens as far as the items carried.

Yes, the prices are higher. I stopped in there at one time, and the same bottle of vitamins that I paid around $11 for in Mission Valley, was over $14 there.

Parking will be my main factor in shopping at the North park location. The Target Express in SP has more than enough parking.

The one time that I went in the SP store, it was nearly empty.

the address at 3029 University Ave... wasn't that the old REI back in the 90s?

It used to be a of stores, I think before Wangs, it was a Big Lots, or maybe a gym.

I grew up in this area. My first recollection of the property is when it was a JCPenny.

A Trip Back in Time: 1970s North Park — Explore North Park

It was the only place to shop if you lived in North Park along with the Sears that used to be over on Washington in Hillcrest. The JCPenny became an REI and then a Pic and Save and then Big Lots. I've since lost track of the changes but I'm glad to see it become something useful again as opposed to the ever-changing trendy restaurant scene these days. I'm sure there will be a lot of drama with the anti-big corporation folks and the small businesses take a hit, but I believe it will be useful. I remember when they wanted to get rid of the Jack in the Box on 30th and Upas because it dod not "fit" the neighborhood. That thing has been there fifty years and all of sudden the neighborhood gets a little trendy and people want to tear it down.
