I live in the Fletcher Hills area and have a home built in 1954. I'm curious where the doorbell electrical transformer would be located on a home of this age? I looked where my furnace is and I don't see anything in there. I also looked next to the actual doorbell box inside and don't see anything close to that where the "transformer" wire could be coming from.

Any ideas?

Any neighbors you can check with? Mine was built in '74, located in the garage, up about 7' off the floor, and almost behind some vertical ducts connected to the furnace. Its mounted on a metal plate cover for a junction box that's in the wall.

Good luck!

My daughter and son in law live in a house in Granite Hills that was built in 1952, and when they needed to repair their doorbell, they discovered that the transformer was at the bottom of their electrical panel on the side of their house. They only found it after they asked the next door neighbor (who'd lived in his house since the 1970s) so agia's suggestion to ask a neighbor is a good one.

Our house was built in 1980, and our original doorbell transformer is in the back of the closet closest to our front door.

But, as we discovered when our doorbell went on the fritz, sometimes it's just easier all around to put in a wireless doorbell.

Rosie to the rescue. That's what we did. We bypassed all the old wiring. May it RIP.

A wireless doorbell is so much easier. You get to choose your ringer-tone too.

found it, it's in my closet by the front door. However the new transformer is 3 wire and I need to replace the old one that only has 2 wire, no ground

Usually in a closet. Stick your head in and look up to right or left like you’re looking behind you and up at the same time.
Otherwise near the attic hatch if you have it

I found it. Here's the peculiar thing - it says "10V" and the video doorbell requires 16-24V. When I hook up a multimeter to the wires to check, it gives me almost 16V? This is a good thing as I this means I don't need to change it out, but I'm curious why the reading is off? I was expecting the multimeter to read close to 10V?

You're probably reading peak-to-peak voltage with your meter. 16 VAC p-p is about 11 VAC RMS. Plus when you're measuring the voltage, the doorbell is not engaged and the transformer secondary does not have a load on it which would likely bring that voltage down a bit.
