I'll be going just for the day very soon. I've been to SD before, but I'm sure there are other things I don't know about. What itinerary would you suggest?

Already know about:

Seaport Village
USS Midway Museum
Bazaar Del Mundo
Gaslamp Quarter
Seaworld
Zoo & Wild Animal Park
Balboa Park w/ museums
Fashion Valley mall
Westfield UTC mall

Any good seafood restaurants?

Where are you staying?

How long is your 'day'?

You've never been to the places listed above?

You're looking for ideas other than your list?

Cabrillo National Monument
Torrey Pines Preserve
Gliderport
Coronado
La Jolla Cove

Since you seem to like shopping, check out the Spanish Village Art Center in Balboa Park; filled with local artisans running their own shops. https://www.balboapark.org/shopping/spanish-village

You cannot do all of these in one day so yes, where you are staying, how much time you have, and if you have a car are all critical to planning an itinerary.

I don't eat fish but I understand there are indeed good seafood restaurants. I just had a great hamburger at Mitch's Seafood on Point Loma while everyone else had fish and chips.

Thanks so far! I know I just missed the county fair at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, in which the last day was July 4th. I also know about the Carlsbad Premium Outlets & Las Americas Premium Outlets.

Is the Liberty Public Market interesting? Just seems like ALL eating places there to me.

Here's the itinerary of what I did when I spent a few days in 2017. I've since gone there for the day in 2018 since then:

Day 1 - Mellow day
Drive down in morning
Bloomingdale's Outlet store (NEW for me at the time!)
Bazaar Del Mundo area
A couple of art supply stores (Artist & Craftsman & Blick's)
Seaport Village & the new Headquarters
Dinner at seafood place (have a few in mind: Fresh Catch Fresh Market & Grill (now closed), Point Loma Seafood)

Day 2
San Diego County Fair at opening time (during June month)
Depending on how long we're at the fair, maybe a shopping mall (Fashion Valley)
Would like to save our appetites for a nice dinner, but depends on what we ate at the fair
(Would go to Belmont Park (new for me) if we weren't going to the fair)

Day 3
Balboa Park to the Natural History, Model Railroad, & Veterans' museums (maybe the Museum of Man)
Hotel Del Coronado, Coronado Plaza, & Coronado Ferry Landing
Westfield UTC shopping mall
Dinner - possibly another seafood place (we only have 1 seafood chain in our area)

Day 4
Check out of hotel in morning & drive home, but along the way...
Safari Wild Animal Park (haven't been in ages! )
Maybe dinner at the Valley View Casino & Hotel - If the wait's too long since it will be Sun late afternoon/early evening, we'll eat somewhere else. A Brazilian Churrascaria is a possibility

Some Other Places I've eaten:

San Diego Pier Cafe at Seaport Village: Lunch or Dinner on San Diego Bay - Pier Cafe
Dumpling Inn, but has ALL the Chinese food you could want: Dumpling Inn- Shanghai Saloon
Napizza: UTC - Napizza - Pizza al Taglio - Best Pizza La Jolla San Diego

Morning arriving at about during the 9am hour since most place open at 10am TO evening, driving home at probably the 7pm hour.

That's just it. I HAVE been to those places I listed. I already know about them, so I just wanted to say that so no one gives those places.

I said "for the day", so no overnight stay. I'll have a car. Will be there from about 9 AM - 7 something PM.

I'd strike the malls off your list. Just another two generic malls like anywhere else.

Just off the top of my head, since you've already spent a lot of time downtown, why not try a different part of San Diego.

Here's one suggestion:

Spend the morning hours in "downtown" La Jolla (lots of shopping and art galleries to explore)

Have lunch at the cafe at Torrey Pines Gliderport (just sandwiches but the view while gliders fly over head is something you'll only find in San Diego) https://www.flytorrey.com/

After lunch, either check out the Salk Institute (it's a world famous building, and its free to walk around https://www.salk.edu/) OR go to Torrey Pines State Reserve (https://www.sandiego.org/articles/pa...erve-park.aspx) and either walk on the beach at the bottom of the cliffs or drive up to the talk and do one of the shorter walks up there.)

Then, head up the coast on the 101 and have an early dinner in Encinitas (more shops there) Visit Encinitas - Encinitas Chamber of Commerce before driving home to Temecula.

(If I remember correctly, you may have been to Carlsbad before so I left that off the list.

Liberty Station Public Market is indeed mostly eating places and a few stands selling products to take home. There's a great cheese store, for example, that sells a huge variety of cheese and also lunches. Liberty Station overall is very historic and interesting to walk around. It also includes a big arts district. https://libertystation.com/directory/arts-district Not sure I'd include it with only the one day, but something to maybe note for a future longer trip.

Depending on what day of the week you're here, you could go to one of the major farmers markets where there about 1/3 produce stands, 1/3 prepared foods, and 1/3 artisan etc. type products. That would include Little Italy Saturday mornings, Hillcrest Sunday mornings, and Ocean Beach Wednesday afternoon/evenings. La Jolla's is also on Sunday and fairly substantial. Most other neighborhoods and towns have weekly markets too but they would be smaller.

You noted considering Belmont Park on an earlier trip so if you want some classic beach time, you could go to Mission Beach for a few hours.
