Had a weird encounter the other day with a woman named Bex. I don't want to violate anyones personal right to privacy so I'm not including her last name or any further specifics. She enthusiastically approached us while out in Point Loma and struck up friendly conversation. Things got weird when she - unprompted - started mentioning her 'mentors' who retired in their late 20s (is mentoring not work?) and how her and her husband were in a position to walk away from their jobs because of their mentors help. Red flags started flying. Things went from friendly convo to realizing she had an agenda and was only being engaging in order to get our information and pivot a sale. At least be upfront that you're pedaling a sale for a pyramid scheme investment cult rather than acting like this was just a spontaneous casual conversation. After this run in we contacted a friend who related they had a nearly identical encounter with another couple, which confirmed that feeling of 'something's off here' about that conversation.

Figure I'd just give a heads up that there are people out there feigning pleasant conversation only to try and get you involved in a financial scheme. Wonderfully disingenuous! Keep your wits about you for this interesting stranger danger.

Just, why? - My thoughts about this encounter.

Also, one further detail that seemed to be in the 'script,' I suppose you could call it, about this pseudo conversational sales pitch is that they find their 'mentors' through their chiropractor. Our friend said the people that approached them said the exact same thing. Which begs the question - why is your chiropractor still working if the people they put you in touch with retired in their 20s? But I digress.

If you get approached, all you have to do is say, "No thanks," ignore them, and keep walking.

Good for you for recognizing this scam. You sound like a strong and analytical person,.... actually the type of person I'm looking for in a new business venture I have. I want you to get in on the ground floor, so act fast. I'll be in touch.

This person approached you in public and tried to scam you, and your first concern is "protecting their privacy"

You're right, next time I'll save myself the time and energy of letting the community know that scammers are afoot. Thank you for showing me the way. How foolish of me to think that deeply manipulative individuals approaching strangers should be something to put out a heads up on.
