I am in the market for a new Highlander Hybrid XLE with no additional options. I am not expecting a discount, but I notice most of the SD area dealers mark them up vs OC/LA where I can find a handful of cars that seem to be at MSRP.

Does anyone know if I walk into a local dealership whether I can order one at MSRP or will they make me pay a markup to 'get' the car? I don't need it right away...and I get why a car on the lot has a markup. God this is the worst time to buy a car, but the used market prices are ridiculous and I kinda have to replace my old Highlander Hybrid. Should I try Costco instead?

Def try Costco, but not many dealers are honoring that deal right now; they don't need to.

Try emailing many dealers and see if any will sell at sticker.

If you don't mind going to El Monte, there's always LONGO.

They have 20 Highlanders right now.

MSRP
TAX
DMV
$85 DOC FEE

That's it.

(I saved $5500 on my T-100, back in 1994, compared to Toyota dealerships in North County.)

I've driven up to LA for less...

Go to OC, LA or the IE. We drove up to Capo Beach and got our new rig for $3K under MSRP. All dealers in SD were tacking on $5K-$10K above MSRP. Well worth the 1 hour drive.

We have a metropolitan area of 20M people just to the north of us. Besides the sheer amount of car dealers up there, most down here are owned by a few groups. Talk about collusion? I’ll never buy a new car in San Diego again.

Make sure to avoid AutoNation dealers. They're the worst.

Last September, it was nearly impossible to get a deal on any mid-size SUV. I needed an SUV to seat 4 maybe 5 with enough room for my battery-powered wheelchair. I finally bought a VW Tiguan at a great price and 0% loan. The VW dealer in Kearny Mesa was loaded with heavily discounted Tiguans. Tiguans often get over-looked because VW is terrible at marketing. VW also makes Audi and they have their Audi marketing plans nailed.

If you haven't driven a late model VW, give one a try. The quality is BMW-like at a Chevy price. If the Tiguan is not big enough for your needs, VW also makes an Atlas which is huge.

You won't be smiling about any German made car when it's in for repairs.

We passed on the VW Atlas for that exact reason. My mechanics of 25 years and 15 years both warned me on the maintenance costs. It’s not linear for its price in comparison to other German autos. We went with what I know and got a new 4Runner.

I am a slow learner. I've had 3 and the last, a BMW M3 cost me 18 grand for a new engine after the mechanic didn't stop when it overheated. Everything on a German car will be twice, if not three times as expensive to fix. A freakin key fob for a beemer cost me 500 bucks.

"If you can't afford to buy it new, you really can't afford to own it used"

I won't mess with them. I have always wanted a BMW with a straight 6 but ONE LED headlamp is $1800 on a modern 3-series. I read stories about folks needing both turbos replaced at 75k - 4500 per!

I watch a guy on YouTube who tears down engines, and the most needlessly complicated are the Audis and VW's - one part will have a 10mm socket, a Torx, and several hex bolts. I still think no one can touch Toyota for overall quality across the full range of vehicles. I also really have come to appreciate Ford. My take - lease a German car, but dont' buy it.
