Every summer we leave hot Las Vegas during July and August. We just changed our minds about our cross country trip this year and are now looking closer to home in the San Diego area. We love to explore during our summer stays.

My DH has been looking into some new, modern condos in Tijuana, too, and he finds them appealing.

About 25 years ago I lived in San Diego and it was very easy to cross the border at San Ysidro but I’m wondering if that is still the case for U.S. citizens or if we’ll be hanging around from hours to get back into the U.S. for day trips if we stay in Tijuana.

Seeking local knowledge!

If you don't have a Sentri pass to cross the border faster, there's a strong possibility that you could be waiting in line for 2+ hours to get back into San Diego.

Doubtful you’d even be able to get one in time for their vacation? Even with one the wait can still be long. Plus everyone in the vehicle also needs one. I’d forget the idea of staying in TJ unless you want to spend the bulk of your vacation in Baja.

If you're staying in Baja, Mexico, why not look into day trips within Baja, Mexico? La Ruta de Vina in the Guadalupe Valley. La Bufadora, south of Ensenada. Ensenada, itself.

If you absolutely must cross back into the USA, your best bet would be Tecate. It's not open 24/7 so check its hours. But, realistically, it's a daft idea to stay in Baja, Mexico if your stay is depending on day trips into San Diego.

Huh? You’ll lose any time gained with the border wait with the drive to/from Tecate, and then some.

There are cool areas in Baja to visit, but those are best for day(s) trips. No need to spend a summer in TJ to do them.

More importantly, if you use the word "daft" you'll be sent to secondary inspection. Guaranteed.

Since we are pretty hesitant to hike alone in MX without a guide — and we love to hike — we were thinking that we’d go into San Diego for hiking. Is it safe to hike alone in Mexico for a senior couple?

In July/August, hiking in general might not be the best outdoor activity for seniors or even people at the peak of health. Although I suppose it depends on what your definition of hiking entails. Walk on the beach? Sure. Traversing off-trail terrain in the desert or mountains? Not recommended. JMO.

LOL. Thanks, very familiar with trail safety and our own limitations. We are very experienced hikers and actually are hike leaders for our club locally. And we do desert and mountain hikes weekly year round. Our concern was trail safety as far as encounters with other humans.

We are nixing the Tijuana thoughts!
