We are thinking of relocating to Carmel Valley area, off the 56 between the 5 and 15. We both work downtown and would be driving in at 8 ish and coming home at 5 or 6. How bad is the commute really?

I hear horror stories but then why do so many people choose to live there? The new communities are really nice. Thank you for your input.

That's not really a bad commute at all b/c most of the traffic is going to the Carmel Valley/Sorrento Valley/UTC area from points north and south, so once you get south of the 5/805 split you'll be fine and won't have any traffic from there all the way to downtown. Actually there really isn't any traffic from the 56 down the 5 to Downtown, there is some slowing for right around the Genesee off ramp b/c people getting off the freeway there.

Heading home you might hit some slowing on the 56 bypass from the 5/805 merge to the 56, but it's not everyday or that long of a distance to be heavy traffic.

It's a reverse commute for the most part. You will hit some heavy traffic northbound in the PM. I would plan on 30-45 minutes.

Most people who live in CV work in Sorrento Valley, there are very few hig-tech jobs in downtown SD.
