Does anyone believe that San Diego will get a basketball or hockey team sometime in the future?

With our financial situation I think that is the last of our worries, lol. There is always the Gulls though if you want to watch some hockey.

No and No.
The NBA was here twice (Rockets and Clippers) and failed both times. We have the Lakers close enough. And So Cal already has 2 NHL franchises (Ducks and Kings) plus Phoenix, so the relatively small hockey market here is pretty saturated.
Let's just be happy that we have two teams in the biggest leagues (NFL and MLB).

What does Phoenix's hockey team have to do with SD?

I'm quite aware of what you said, but I must ask about you mentioning Phoenix's hockey team.

I was just trying to illustrate how much saturation the NHL has in the soutwest, an area that is not exactly hockey crazy. A hockey team in SD would not be able to draw fans from the OC, LA, or Arizona, since they already have teams of their own.

The Gulls left years ago.We need an arena to house a NHL or NBA team. The SDSA is outdated to small and does not meet the standards of both leagues. So I would say nah to either a NBA or NHL team.

Yes, I do. Will it be in our lifetime though? That's the real question and somehow I doubt it. The Padres went through obstacle after obstacle getting Petco Park built, the Chargers are struggling in getting a new stadium, and there is no expansion team or current team that would ever consider making The Sports Arena their home. It's more like a high school gym than it is a professional arena these days.

And the city of San Diego just doesn't seem to share the belief of some other cities that professional sports teams really do a lot for a metro city, it's more than just a game. A franchise brings jobs, their stadium or arena can really boost the economy and help develop an area, Petco Park is a perfect example of this.

If I had to guess I'd say we will get one of the two, but not anytime soon and never without a new arena.

Maybe a NBA basketball team, I mean SD used to have 2 franchises in the past, so I wouldn't see why not?

I heard that the owner of the Sports Arena wants to tear down the old one, and rebuild a new arena so hopefully it will attract an outside NBA or NHL team that are considering leaving there current city, and expanding to San Diego.

The SA really does need to be rebuilt, it's so old and crappy, there is really no point in keeping it running, all it's used for, is concerts and that's about it. The lack of revenue will hopefully force the owner to move even faster to build a new arena. Because as of now the SA is truly not worth keeping the doors open.

So yes I can see an NBA team in SD future, but that all depends on what the owner of the SA wants to do with his current crap hole. He MUST rebuild, if a NBA franchise will ever consider coming to San Diego.
