I will be taking a job as a San Diego police officer and am looking for a place in Encinitas. How bad is the commute? What city has the best commute to and from SD. Thank you.

This depends largely on what time of day you leave. Rule of thumb is the earlier the better. It's heaviest starting at around 7:30 until about 9 am. Before then, there's not much traffic at all (barring accidents, rain, etc). The traffic generally lets up and goes full speed by the time you hit Solana Beach or Del Mar.
Worst case to downtown-- 45 mins
Best case -- 25 mins

Depends on where you are going in San Diego. 25 minutes to 8 fwy or maybe downtown. But if you are going to 32nd street it could take you longer.

I agree with the above posts, it depends on the time of day you leave. It could take 25 minutes or 45 minutes plus. The morning commute is definately on the longer side as well as the afternoon commute. I've found that if you're going to drive to North County, it's best to get on the I-5 by 3 PM so you're not sitting in too much traffic.
