I am still in the research process of relocating out to SD. I will visit again this summer to see whether I like it. I am a teacher in S. Florida. Does anybody know the job prospects for teachers in the city of SD. I also have a few questions. How much would a newer condo, say 1 bed/1 bath cost in or near downtown? Is Downtown SD a nice place to live?

Where should I stay to get a good feel of SD. I plan on being there a week, so what do you suggest I do? I have mixed feelings about renting a car. I really want to check out urban SD but I also want to get a general feel of the place. What hotels do you suggest, that are about 120 per night and are clean and safe. thanks...

Default Teaching in the area

I'm not 100% certain on this, but I'm not sure if teaching jobs are overly plentiful in San Diego. You may have to go inland or in some of the rough sections to start off with. My husband's co-worker has applied to various teaching jobs in the north county area and hasn't had any luck...and he's already an existing teacher. He may be looking for something more specific than what I'm aware of.

They are building and hiring teachers in the Temecula area (Temecula/Murrieta/Menifee area), and that could be an option. It woudl be a reverse commute for you if you wanted to live down in San Diego...but probably close to an hour each way, door to door.

Special Ed, Math, Science, Bilingual - huge demand. Everyone else - not so good.

Downtown SD is indeed a nice place to live if a little 'pre-fab' and touristy. A small 1BR condo on the low-end will start somewhere in the mid-high 300K range.

Definitely rent a car - driving is a big part of life in SD. Check out the core urban 'hoods - Hillcrest, Normal Heights. Hang out at Balboa Park. Go to OB, go to La Jolla. All the major hotels are here - just stay away from SROs and residential Hotels which are still all over downtown SD.

An SRO is a flophouse, you'll know it when you see it.

Early June.. couldy and cool at the beach, warm and sunny inland. Mild chance of rain although doesn't look likely this year.

SD is definitely not a good market for new teachers. I had a really hard time getting a contract there, and the only ones I did obtain were temporary contracts. You may want to target private schools, as the school districts can be hard to break into. You'll have no problem subbing, though. Chula Vista and San Diego City Schools should provide plenty of subbing work for you. Yeah, you'll probably be looking at at least mid-high 300k for a condo in a good area. We're in Florida now, actually. I can understand how you'd want to move to SD. It's awesome out there! Just be aware of the tough job market for elementary ed teachers and the high cost of living.
