What do you think the general level of tolerance towards eccentricity in San Diego is compared to other cities. Eccentricity, according to Wikipedia, is "unusual or odd behavior on the part of an individual. This behavior would typically be perceived as unusual or unnecessary, without being demonstrably maladaptive." I bolded the last part to make it clear that I mean the benign eccentrics- not dangerous, creepy wierdos like stalkers, etc. Would you say that people tend to frown upon eccentricity and expect more conformity or predictable, "normal" behavior? Any particular neighborhoods that are more tolerant than others? Please discuss.

Depends where you are exactly, but in places like Hillcrest and OB and other beaches that tolerance level is probably about as high as it gets. In places like Rancho Bernardo or Carmel Valley, probably much less tolerant. My impression of California has always been one of great tolerance towards the wild and weird, perhaps even too much tolerance in some cases.

^Yeah I agree with that, just like pretty much everywhere else it depends on what area you are in.

The crap that goes on in Berkeley and SF would not be tolerated in the part of the Bay Area I grew up in. Just as the stuff in OB would not be tolerated in Del Mar or other suburbs/family oriented areas.

The more urban, younger, and liberal the area is the higher level of tolerance there will be imo.

In general, the San Diego Area is not as accepting of eccentricity as Los Angeles area or perhaps even SF. There are places within the city as some have alreayd mentioned.

I've always enjoyed the eccentric. Too much white bread and mayo bores me.

I like the analogy and I agree very much. SF the city always has lots of interesting characters out and about. Same with Ocean Beach and Venice Beach.

eccentric tolerance corresponds to the wealth of the eccentric not to his residence.

You may have a point, but my eccentric friends have all been on the poor side, the woman in the country illegally from Canada who lived in her van with her big dog. The couple who owned a little new age store and lived in it too (not rooms up above, just lived in the store). Poor as church mice my eccentric friends. It was part of the price they paid for doing there own thing as far as I could see.
