I would like to move to San Diego and need help as to what area would be best for me. Ideally, I would like to be in a more "urban" place and not a gated or retirement community. Something less family oriented with perhaps with a nice "downtown" or marina. $425K price range. Any suggestions?

Are you looking for a single family home or a multi-family complex?

I'm looking for a single family home, townhome or condominium and I am self employed. I do not need to get a job.

Should I assume that you would like to own rather than rent?

Since she said 425k, I am assuming that means that is the purchase price she is interested in paying. Try Little Italy, Hillcrest, the Gaslamp, all very urban, not gated or retirement communities. I am thinking condo living in those areas. Mission Hills is nice.

Alot of new condos have sprung up around downtown that will fit your price range. SD caught me off guard how urban its downtown was when I had a second home there (to escape the phoenix summer heat haha). Try little Italy or a bit further south of that. Enjoy!

Condos in and around downtown San Diego are very popular with empty-nesters, second-home owners from AZ, and retirees with family in SD. In fact I would say there are probably more condos as second-homes and renters than owner-occupiers in Downtown SD. San Diego is very retiree-oriented and you will find many people doing exactly what you want to do.

425k should get you into a nice 1BR in a newer high-rise building. It is a turnkey lifestyle with easy access to the airport, trolley, and downtown scene.
