My s/o will be visiting before the summer is over, and we would like to know of some good hotels. Also, I hear so much about LaJolla(sp) Which area should we avoid, and will we need a car to get around, because we are trying to avoid renting a vehicle because it is too costly. Anyhoo, some feedback please and thanks.

Are you looking for a hotel within walking distance to the beach? Any kids staying with you?

Nice San Diego hotels can get pretty pricey during our summer months. If you're looking to 'snag a bargain' try Priceline.com.

Tell us more about your trip and what things you are interested in doing and maybe we can help. La Jolla is very nice but a car is very necessary there.

Car rentals are not that costly-look online for cheap deals...you can often find them, especially on weekends, for 15/day. Even if you only rent for part of your trip (ie, a weekend), It's really worth it to do a car in SD, so you can check out la jolla del mar, torrey pines, as well as head inland a bit to the zoo, balboa park, etc.

If you don't care about beaches at all, then stay downtown in the gaslamp, or in hillcrest, and you could do public transit and stay just in those areas.

But to really enjoy SD on vacation, a car is your best option, IMO.
There's alot to enjoy, and it's a very spread out city, with no public transit in most areas.
