I've been meaning to ask here for advice on which candidate to vote for since I don't know much about any of them and they all seem to be the same on vague talking points. [improve Oakland, make Oakland better, etc.]

And why are so many candidates running, does Oakland prevent candidates from declaring a party?

Don Perata is going to win, I voted for him. The Black community in general does not accept homosexuality so that is a big obstacle for that woman to overcome in Oakland where 1/4th of the population is Black. Regardless of her view point.

To make my decision I went to the different candidates' websites and looked at their proposals. None of them seem that great, but I like some of Kaplan's ideas (e.g. develop the area around the Coliseum) so I voted for her. Perata seems really corrupt: 25 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Vote for Don Perata | Endorsements | East Bay Express. I'm not sure why people support him, other than name recognition.

That page has Kaplan endorsements all over it, the guy who wrote that also hates Perata. I'm not buying the typical pandering.

neither does the latino community so that's 1/2 of the population to overcome... the asian community isn't too accepting either.

Yes, but is any of the article untrue?

Not much to be concerned with here at all. I'm not voting for any of these three candidates anyway. They're all incompetent.
