It was not my intent to put the fear of God in you. I just wanted to make sure you knew the actual risks of driving that section of road. What location of Stockton is your job in?

I drove from Stockton to Antioch for two years several times a week in the 1990's. When It was foggy or raining hard I would go through Tracy taking the Byron Highway. It added about 25 minutes each way to my commute but the peace of mind for me and my family was worth it.

Hwy 4 commute is fine as long as you understand the risks. My suggestion is make a couple of trips on it at commute times and when its dark. Just don't ever get comfortable when driving it. Stay alert at all times.
I would not let it keep me from accepting a job offer.

Wow, you must need a hug. I didn't enlist this forums advice for rude comments, like someone must be on crack. When the information is conflicting it's only wise to get the most accurate information. Thanks SONARRAT, for reminding me how thankful I am to have respectful, sweet people in my environment.

Thanks bulldogdad for your post. This is the type of information I'm looking for, not the wisecracks. You didn't scare me. The job is in downtown near Gleason Park and yes I intend to do the drive soon. Thanks again.

My intention is not to wisecrack. Someone suggested to you the drive could be done in 30 minutes, and you have been clearly corrected that making it there in 30 minutes, on any of the available roads, would be either impossible or suicidal. You have been given all the information you need; it is a hour's drive with a stretch on a two-lane undivided road on Hwy 4 with a 55 mph speed limit. There is fog, a portion of winding levee, and occasional unprotected cross traffic, and it can be dangerous. Hwy 12 is the same deal, just with a toll bridge added, and so is the Byron Highway (with the added quirk that passing is allowed, opening the door for head-ons).
