I'm really sick of the filth, crime, panhandlers, overpriced housing, and provincialism of SF ... but I have a good job in the City and would like to keep it. Wondered if anyone has any recommendations as to a friendly, affordable, "normal" (e.g., no BDSM street fairs) community in the Bay Area that is within reasonable commuting distance of the financial district. Otherwise, I'm going to get the hell out of here.

Okay then- get the hell out of here. I can't handle whiners and people that want San Francisco to be like Des Moines. Research better next time, troll number two of the day. Wow...two in a row!

Gees Clongirl, I usually enjoy your posts - did you get up on the wrong side of the bed today?

Hey Legal - I did time in NYC, DC and my husband lived in Boston so by the time we got here we decided that we could check 'major metropolitan' off our list of things to do. Besides that, I grew up in a very overcast place and react poorly to fog, so Walnut Creek was a terrific choice for me.

You can have a walk-to-everything lifestyle, have Zagat-rated restaurants, shops, night life and culture a stone's throw away and still have a sunny climate, relatively affordable housing and terrific school scores, should that be or become important to you. Besides, it's a 30 minute BART ride to the financial district - most Muni riders have a longer commute than that!

Try Marin. If you are single, Sausalito might be a good fit. If you are married, anywhere in Marin is great, but stay south of San Rafael or you will be too far to make the commute seem easy.

Its gorgeous here, great communities, clean air, upscale. Its a perfect distance to SF to enjoy the dining and shopping (10 min drive to the Marina), and far enough away so the things you complain about won't be an issue. You can take the ferry downtown for your commute.

If you've been here for some time, you know the drill: East Bay. The peninsula isn't going to be a lot more affordable.

marin county is gorgeous and I would love to live there. I don't see it as much of a singles place though. If that was the case I'd go with Walnut creek. But if you intend to do you socializing in san Francisco and home life elsewhere. I would pick Marin.
