I know sf has city college, but what about Oakland or Berkeley? Also I lived in California for 3 years until late "09". Do you think I could still qualify for in state resident tuition?

Berkeley City is probably your best bet

DVC and DeAnza are also very good schools, but they aren't very close

I wouldnt necessarily choose those schools over Laney or Merritt. Basically at the CC level your not going to see much variance in quality as far as instruction in my opinion.

And if they are living in Oakland/Berkeley there's no need to leave to go to community college.

Speaking of which, what a tremendous resource CCs have been to people who would never otherwise be able to get their degree. Its incredible that based on your academic record at a CC, you can literally transfer to any of the top schools in the country.

Laney students can also take quite a few Cal classes. I ran into lots when I was at Cal.

Not sure about Berkeley City College. I didn't run into them on campus.

i don't think it really matters.
when you have your degree from CAL ,duke ,u of chicago or stanford no one is going to care what cc you went to.
whatever cc you are at the goal should be obtain great grades and transfer.

it actually DOES matter

some schools have higher transfer rates to UCs than others and they have the faculty to show for it. In fact, a lot of schools have specific transfer agreements with certain UCs/CSUs. I know that a few years back when I was a student, DVC had the highest transfer rate to UC Berkeley than any of the other schools in the Bay Area. A 4.0 from Contra Costa College or Laney doesn't carry the same weight as other schools.

Because I'm getting my Master's and plan on teaching at a community college in the Bay Area, I've made a real effort to find out where the best places are to teach and which ones pay the most. From what I've encountered, and the discussions I've had with faculty members at various CCs around the Bay Area, I can certainly say it DOES MATTER.
